33 Countries Most Likely to Face Water Shortages by 2040

According to research by the World Resources Institute, by 2040, 33 countries worldwide are expected to face severe water scarcity. This study used a series of climate models and socioeconomic scenarios to assess and rank future water stress in 167 countries, specifically forecasting conditions for 2020, 2030, and 2040.

The research indicates that by 2040, 33 countries will experience severe water stress, with Argentina facing moderate to high risk, with a 20% to 40% likelihood of water shortages.

Additionally, the forecast shows that some countries will see a significant change in water stress compared to current levels, including Chile, Botswana, Estonia, and Namibia. These countries are likely to face considerable water resource challenges in the coming decades.
